01 / Website planning
Before you redesign a website
A useful website starts with the people who visit it. Answer these questions before getting into colors, layouts, or technology.
- Who is the primary audience, and why are they visiting?
- What should visitors be able to find or do?
- Which pages and content are essential?
- Who will update the content after launch?
- What does the experience need to support on mobile?

Map a process before changing it
Describe the current process from start to finish. A simple map makes it easier to spot repetitive work and unclear responsibilities.
- What starts the process, and when is it complete?
- Who is involved at each stage?
- Which tools or documents does each person use?
- Where is information entered more than once?
- Which step causes the most delay or confusion?

Separate essentials from extras
A focused first scope is easier to discuss and evaluate. Keep the required outcome visible when deciding what belongs in the project.
- Write down the business outcome in one sentence.
- List what must be included for the result to be useful.
- Keep optional improvements in a separate list.
- Identify dependencies, approvals, and available materials.
- Decide who can confirm scope and priorities.
